Chief Luthuli honoured with new gold coin

South Africa's first Nobel Peace Prize winner and freedom fighter Albert Luthuli was honoured by the South African Mint Company which launched the 2005 Protea Gold Coin Series featuring Luthuli on Tuesday.
Managing director of SA Mint Andile Mvinjelwa said this year they were focusing on South Africa's Nobel Peace Prize winners.
Mvinjelwa said: "Chief Luthuli was and still remains a great icon and we are honouring him in the oldest and most significant way we can.
"It is no co-incidence that we are launching this coin (at the same time as) the 50th anniversary of the Freedom Charter. The coins we are striking here are symbolic of Luthuli's role in the Freedom Charter.
