[I]Georgia to Depict Abkhazia Images on New Banknotes
The Georgian National Bank announced a tender for the design of a new 200 lari banknote on August 15.
The new banknotes are to depict Niko Nikoladze, a 19th century Georgian writer and public figure and the reverse side of the banknote will feature an image of the capital of breakaway Abkhazia, Sokhumi.
The authorities of the unrecognized republic have already protested against this decision of the Georgian National Bank to depict Sokhumi’s images on Georgian currency.
The deadline for submitting design proposals is September 20. Both Georgian and foreign artists/designers can participate in the competition.[/I
Fiji intends to place a new $100 note into circulation amid changes to currency approved by the Cabinet.
Minister for Finance and Economics Planning Ratu Jone Kubuabola said that the Cabinet approval comes under the Fiji Currency Reform 2002-2007.
Changes would include upgrading the security features of the new banknotes design series and changes in the banknote sizes. The banknotes will vary lengthwise as a blind recognition and security feature.
The $100 banknote will be primarily yellow while the other banknote denominations will retain their existing primary colours.
The highest banknote denomination would be the standard size of 156mm by 67mm receding at 5mm towards the lowest banknote denomination.
On 25 August 2005 Danmark's Nationalbank introduces a new, a more secure 50-krone banknote with a hologram and fluorescent colours. The motifs remain unchanged. The new 50-krone banknote completes the upgrading of the Danish banknote series. For additional information see Denmark National Bank Press Release 24 August 2005
Format 125 mm x 72 mm. Issued on 25. August 2005.
Hologram and fluorescent colours:
The metallic hologram on the face of the banknote alternately shows the figure 50, the Roman numeral L and a flower. Fluorescent colours, which are visible under ultraviolet light, are used on both sides of the banknote. On the face, a centaur becomes visible under ultraviolet light, and on the reverse the green colour shines, particularly in the ring on the right-hand side of the banknote.
The portrait of Karen Blixen: The face of the banknote bears a portrait of the writer Karen Blixen (17 April 1885 – 7 September 1962). She is acclaimed for e.g. Seven Gothic Tales (1935) and her memoirs Out of Africa (1937). The face of the banknote is also decorated with flowers, of which Karen Blixen was very fond.
The centaur on the reverse: The motif on the reverse of the 50-krone banknote is inspired by a stone relief from Landet Church on the island of Tåsinge.
The 50-krone banknote bears the word "femti", not "halvtreds" which is the usual Danish word for "fifty". Femti is a numeral used on cheques and giro payment orders. Danmarks Nationalbank first used it on the 50-krone banknote issued in 1957, and the present banknote is thus the third to bear this word
The Bank of Korea (BOK) has decided to issue large denomination bills, including 50,000 won and 100,000 won bills, again.
A high-level officials of the BOK said on August 30, “Issuing large denominations failed several times, but given the economy’s size, the value of bills available is too small, causing inconveniences,” highlighting the need to issue larger denomination notes.
The largest bill as of now is the 10,000 won bill, which has been in use since 1973.
The BOK has already decided upon the size of the bills in preparation for the large bill issuance. For 50,000 won denominations, the bill will be 154mm wide and 68mm long, and the 100,000 won denomination bills will be 160mm and 68mm long.
The lengths of 50,000 won and 100,000 won notes will be the same as those of the new 1,000 won, 5,000 won, and 10,000 won denomination notes to be issued next year. For the widths, there is an increase of 6mm according to the denomination value, ranging from 1,000 won (136mm) to 100,000 won (160mm) denominations.
According to the guidelines on issuing large denominations, the BOK successfully requested the Committee on Deposit Business under the Korea Federation of Banks that the size of the new checks and banknotes should be the same as the 100,000 won bill with the width of 160mm, and the length of 68mm.
In addition, it had also ordered CD/ATM producers to develop automated machines with the size of the 100,000 won bill in mind.
This is to avoid inconveniences to re-develop machinery of CD and ATM according to newly issued denominations, after making them to fit the new 10,000 won bill certain to be issued.
The BOK’s issuance director general, Kim Doo-kyung, said, “Once large denominations are issued, about 800 million 10,000 won bills would be replaced, taking up about 64 percent of the total number of bills (amounting to 2.07183 billion),” adding, “There would also be significant cost reductions in currency issuance and distribution.”
Since the inauguration of the BOK Governor, Park Seung, in May 2002, the BOK has suggested several ideas, including issuance of large denominations, changes in currency unit values, and design changes to the government, but only the last one has been accepted. Issuing large denominations requires government approval and consultations with the Monetary Board.
However, Director-General Kim said, “Compared to 1973 when the 10,000 bill first appeared, the per-capital Gross National Income has increased by 35 times, and consumer prices have soared by more than 12 times, but the face value of the denominations in use are the same,” adding, “Issuing large denominations is a more urgent task than changing the units of face value.”
The BOK expects to issue 50,000 and 100,000 won denomination bills in two years after it is approved and the designation of the figures on the bills and their designs are completed.

" New GEL 200 banknote unveiled under wraps
By Eka Basilaia
On September 20, the National Bank of Georgia held a briefing to announce the winner of the competition for the design of the new 200-lari note.
The selection commission, consisting of six members and headed by National Bank President Roman Gotsiridze, made its decision Tuesday and revealed the three top finalists at the press conference.
"We have been discussing for an hour and a half, instead of the planned half hour. The decision was really hard to make. We had presentations from five prominent foreign firms. Georgian designers were highly qualified as well," Gotsiridze stated.
The winning submissions will be awarded money - the first place winner will receive GEL 3,000, the second place winner GEL1,500 and the third place winner GEL 500.
According to the commission's decision, first prize went to Georgian designer Nodar Malazonia, who has designed all the Georgian lari notes in circulation. However, Gotsiridze noted that the reverse of the note needs some refining. Coming in second was Robert Kalina from the Austrian firm Oesterichische Note und Sicherheitsdruck and occupying third place was the Swiss company Orell Fussil security Printing Ltd., which did not present an individual designer. The new GEL 200 note will be put in circulation at the end of next year.
The Georgian National Bank first launched an international contest for revealing the best designs for the GEL 200 note in August of the current year. Taking part were Georgian artists/designers (Nodar Malazonia, Mamuka Gongadze, Giorgi Kutsishvili, Davit Beitrishvili, Ilia Naxutsrishvili, Shalva Lursmanashvili) and major foreign companies (the German firm Giesecke & Devrient, the Belgian National Bank, the Austrian firm Oesterichische Note und Sicherheitsdruck, the Swiss Orell Fussil Security Printing Ltd. an the Swedish Crane AB.).
The new note depicts early 20th century Georgian statesman Niko Nikoladze on the front and an image of the Abkhaz capital of Sokhumi on the reverse.
According to the commission members, applicants were free to choose from among 20 photographs and slides provided by the National Bank for the image of Sokhumi to be depicted.
"National currency is a bearer of many important messages" Gotsiridze told journalists. "One is economics: Niko Nikoladze is the symbol of Europe and economic choice. Nikoladze was the initiator of one of the most successful projects in the Georgian economy's history - the Poti Port. Sokhumi is our beloved city. As long as we are alive we should not forget Abkhazia. Everyone, while carrying the note, should always remember that there is a problem with Abkhazia and that it should be settled."
The commission presented samples of only the second and third place finishers. For security reasons, the winning banknote was not revealed. As Gotsiridze stated, it will become known to the public only after the decision is made to put it into circulation, otherwise there will be a risk of counterfeit."

Die Werte zu 1000 und 500 Escudos tragen das Datum 2002.
Ob weitere Werte (2000 und 5000) auch aktualisiert wurden, ist bisher noch nicht bekannt und war nicht in Erfahrung zu bringen.
