COMMEMORATIVE COIN ON THE OCCASION OF PAPHOS TAKING OVER THE ROLE OF THE EUROPEAN CAPITAL OF CULTURE FOR 2017
The Central Bank of Cyprus (CBC) announces the issue of a commemorative coin of nominal value €2. This is a circulation coin with mint year 2017.
A. DESCRIPTION OF ISSUE
The coin is issued on the occasion of Paphos taking over the role of the European Capital of Culture for 2017. The national side of the coin depicts the "Paphos Ancient Odeon", which dates back to the 2nd century AD and is among the most important monuments of Paphos. The "Odeon" was used during ancient times as the venue of cultural events. Nowadays it is used for musical and theatrical performances. The designer is Mr George Stamatopoulos and the coins were minted by the Printing Works Department of Bank of Greece.
The total mintage is 430.000 coins, of which 5.000 coins in proof condition placed in cases, 7.000 coins in brilliant uncirculated condition placed in capsules and 418.000 coins in uncirculated condition offered in rolls of 25 pieces each.
The selling price, including VAT, is €12 for the proof condition coin in a case and €3 for the brilliant uncirculated condition coin in a capsule, plus forwarding and insurance expenses. The coins in rolls will be sold at their nominal value plus handling charges (5% on nominal value), forwarding and insurance expenses and VAT (where applicable).

Design:
Common face: A geographical image of Europe.
National face: A composition depicting Paphos Ancient Odeon. The phrase «ΠΑΦΟΣ 2017 – ΠΟΛΙΤΙΣΤΙΚΗ ΠΡΩΤΕΥΟΥΣΑ ΤΗΣ ΕΥΡΩΠΗΣ» and the words "ΚΥΠΡΟΣ" "KIBRIS" are circularly inscribed. The twelve stars are also depicted in the composition’s outer ring.
