Keywords:

The Eesti Pank Executive Board confirmed the programme of issuing collector and commemorative coins for 2018 and 2019. It foresees Eesti Pank issuing ten new collector and commemorative coins in the coming years.

Several of these coins will be connected to the 100th anniversary of the Republic of Estonia. “As the anniversary of Estonia is a very important event for our country and our people, we are making a big contribution as the central bank to marking this with collector and commemorative coins. We are issuing more coins than usual, and we hope that the two-euro coin with the special design for the anniversary will reach many people and will be a souvenir of this important day for our state”, said Ardo Hansson, Governor of Eesti Pank.

Eesti Pank will issue four coins in 2018 to mark the anniversary of the republic. There will be a two-euro commemorative coin issued jointly by the Baltic states and a similar coin dedicated to the centenary of the Republic of Estonia, and a silver collector coin and a gold one. Two further silver collector coins will be issued next year, one for the Estonian delegation to the winter Olympics, and the other for the 150th anniversary of the birth of Jaan Tõnisson.

In 2019 Eesti Pank will issue four coins. There will be two-euro commemorative coins for the 150th anniversary of the first song festival and the 100th anniversary of the founding of the first Estonian language university in Tartu, a silver collector coin for the 200th anniversary of the birth of Johann Voldemar Jannsen, and the second coin in the series dedicated to the Hanseatic towns, a silver collector coin for Hanseatic Viljandi.

The technical details for the coins, with the nominal value, size and weight of collector coins, and the mintage and issue date are published by Eesti Pank well before the coins are released.

Suggestions for minting collector and commemorative are welcome from everyone, and can be sent through the Eesti Pank website, by email or by post. Suggestions for coins to be minted in 2020 can be sent until the end of August this year. All the suggestions are considered by an advisory committee invited by Eesti Pank, and their expert opinions and recommendations are used as the basis for the Executive Board of Eesti Pank to decide which coins to mint.

Eesti Pank announces a competition to design a collector coin for Johann Voldemar Jannsen
11.04.2018

Eesti Pank has announced a competition to design a collector coin dedicated to the 200th anniversary of the birth of Johann Voldemar Jannsen, which will be open to individual designers or to groups.

At the suggestion of the advisory committee at Eesti Pank, the central bank will be issuing a collector coin in May 2019 with a portrait of the leader of the national awakening and journalist Johann Voldemar Jannsen. Jannsen is famous to Estonians as the author of the words to the national anthem of the Republic of Estonia.

The nominal value of the silver coin is 12 euros. The elements that must be included in the design are the national great coat of arms, the words “Eesti Vabariik” and the year 2019 on the obverse side, and the nominal value with the euro symbol (12€) on the reverse. Instead of the design drawing, a physical model of the obverse and reverse of the coin may be submitted.

Designs for entry in the competition should be submitted by 25 May 2018 at noon to Eesti Pank to: Mündižürii, Eesti Pank, Estonia pst 13, 15095 Tallinn.

The detailed technical, participation and assessment conditions and criteria

Participants in the design competition can submit more than one design and the winners will be announced by the jury invited by Eesti Pank by 28 June 2018 at the latest. Once the coin is released, the designers of the three best submissions will receive prizes, with the winning design receiving 2000 euros, the second placed design receiving 700 euros, and the third placed 500.

Eesti Pank is happy to receive suggestions for collector or commemorative coins by post or email or through its website. The bank passes all the suggestions it receives to the advisory committee for analysis and expert opinion. The silver coin dedicated to Hanseatic Viljandi will use a design by a student from the Estonian Academy of Arts

The panel convened by Eesti Pank declared Elisabeth Juusu, a student at the Estonian Academy of Arts, the winner of the design competition for the collector coin dedicated to Hanseatic Viljandi. The design competition was only open to students who took a course in coin design at the Estonian Academy of Arts in the autumn semester.

Rait Roosve, Head of the Cash and Security Department of Eesti Pank, said that the joint project with the Estonian Academy of Arts was quite satisfactory. “The visions of the students who tried their hand at the tricky task of coin design were brave and modern. We are looking forward to seeing these young designers enter the public coin design competitions of Eesti Pank”, he added.

The winning design for the silver coin is called Four Symbols and features a medieval symbol for trade that brings together forms signifying fruits, fish, candles and a merchant’s boat.

Second place among the 22 entries in the design competition went to Syret Kärdi and Villem Sarapuu for the design named Lina, and third place went to Elvo Jakobson for Roos.

The silver coin with a nominal value of eight euros will be issued this spring and 4000 of the coins will be minted.

Once the coin is released, the designers of the six best submissions will receive prizes, with the winning design receiving 1300 euros, and the others receiving between 150 and 600 euros.

The coin for Hanseatic Viljandi was designed by Elisabeth Juusu, a student of graphic design at the Estonian Academy of Arts. The design on the coin brings together symbols for grain, fish, candles and a merchant’s boat.

A total of 4000 coins will be minted. The proof quality silver (Ag 925) collector coin weighs 28.28 grams and is 38.61 mm in diameter.

The collector coin for Hanseatic Viljandi is part of a series of coins dedicated to the Estonian Hanseatic towns. In February 2017, Eesti Pank released silver and gold coins dedicated to Hanseatic Tallinn.

What are collector coins?

The silver coin dedicated to Hanseatic Viljandi is a collector coin. Collector coins are mostly made of precious metals and commemorate important events or people for the issuing country. Collector coins are only legal tender in the country of issue, though they are not intended for circulation but rather for collecting or giving as gifts. Their price is usually higher than their nominal value.

What does proof quality mean?

The proof is the quality of the coin. Proof quality means that the coin has been specially made and the quality of it has been checked repeatedly during the minting process. Proof quality coins stand out for having a brilliant reflective surface and a matte surface.

Eesti Pank is issuing 10 million one-cent coins into circulation
25.10.2019

Eesti Pank ordered 10 million one cent coins from the Slovakian mint to cover the needs of merchants for low value euro coins to give as change in the years ahead. As five-cent coins and larger ones circulate freely, there are sufficient of them in circulation and the central bank does not need to order them every year. An average of two truckloads of new one and two-cent coins are brought to Estonia every year though, because people receive them as change from shop tills but then use them later on very little for paying with.

The central bank has started a discussion about whether the circulation of one and two-cent coins should be limited and rounding rules introduced. It is not proposed that the prices of individual goods or services be rounded off, but only the final total to be paid at the till would be rounded and only when the payment is made in cash. Rounding would be up or down to the nearest five cents. Experience from other countries shows that this does not raise prices overall, but it substantially reduces the use of one and two-cent coins. A Eurobarometer survey carried out last year showed that 71% of Estonian consumers support the idea of introducing rounding rules.

The new one-cent circulating coins will be available from the Eesti Pank Museum and the Omniva online shop from 25 October. They are the same as earlier coins in design, but they have the minting year stamped as 2019.

Alongside the one-cent coins, the central bank is issuing two two-euro circulating coins with special designs this year. One million commemorative coins dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the song festival were issued in May, and a two-euro coin with a special design dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the first Estonian language university will be issued into circulation in November.
