The silver collector coin dedicated to Friedrich Karl Akel will use a design by Kristo Kooskora
08.06.2020

The silver collector coin dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the birth of the statesman Friedrich Karl Akel will use a design by Kristo Kooskora. The Eesti Pank Supervisory Board decided that his design, named Optika, was the best submitted.

The winning design shows a fragment from a portrait of the talented diplomat Friedrich Karl Akel and his signature against a background of a waving Estonian tricolour. The strictly regular design and images of the collector coin are a reference to Akel’s profession as an ophthalmologist, his position as head of the state, his personal qualities, and his wide network of contacts.

The winning designer Kristo Kooskora graduated from Tartu Art School and holds a Masters in Cultural Heritage and Conservation from the Estonian Academy of Arts. Alongside his everyday design work he is a researcher of architectural heritage and a supervisor in the Faculty of Arts and Culture of the Estonian Academy of Arts.

The silver coin with a nominal value of 15 euros is dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the birth of the Estonian statesman, politician, diplomat and doctor Friedrich Karl Akel, and will be released by the central bank in autumn 2021.

In total 23 designs were submitted for the competition. The winning design was by Kristo Kooskora, second place went to Tiiu Pirsko and Mati Veermets, and third to a design by Mall Nukke.

The silver coin dedicated to Hanseatic Pärnu will use the design by Aidi Mesi

19.11.2020

The competition to design a silver coin dedicated to Hanseatic Pärnu was won by Aidi Mesi. The Eesti Pank Supervisory Board decided that the design named Kurss Pärnule, or Course for Pärnu, was the best submitted.

The winning designer explained that she was inspired by the idea of the Hanseatic League, which was primarily a maritime trade organisation in the North and Baltic Seas, and within which Pärnu or Uus-Pärnu was one of the most important seaports in Livonia.
“The design symbolises maritime trade with the geographical coordinates of Pärnu and a compass, which seafarers used to set their course in mediaeval times and still do today. I believe this design for the coin is still relevant today, as Pärnu is not only a seaside resort town, but also a seafaring and port town”, Aidi Mesi said.
The winning designer Aidi Mesi graduated from the Estonian Academy of Arts in graphic design and works as a freelance designer and graphic design instructor.
The central bank will issue the silver coin dedicated to Hanseatic Pärnu with a nominal value of eight euros into circulation most probably in spring 2021.
In total 66 designs were submitted for the competition. The winning design was by Aidi Mesi, and second place went to Kristen Ukanis. Joint third place was awarded to designs by Heino Prunsvelt and Rainer Kasekivi.

The silver coin dedicated to Hanseatic Pärnu is to go on sale

05.04.2021
  • 4000 of the coins will be minted
  • The coin will cost 45 euros and has a nominal value of 8 euros
  • Sales of the coin will start on Saturday 10 April at 09.00
On 10 April, when the town of Pärnu celebrates its 770th anniversary, Eesti Pank will issue into circulation a silver commemorative coin dedicated to Hanseatic Pärnu. This will be the third in the series of collector coins dedicated to Estonian Hanseatic towns.
The coins will not be sold in post offices or in the shop of the museum of Eesti Pank. Sales of the coin will start in the online store on Saturday 10 April at 09.00. Each purchaser may buy up to 10 coins, and the coins cannot be reserved in advance.
The silver coin was designed by Aidi Mesi, a graphic designer from Pärnu, who was inspired in her design by the Hanseatic League. “I knew that the design for the Pärnu coin must certainly feature the sea or the beach, but this was quite difficult as it is a coin for the Hanseatic town. Pärnu does not have any well-known symbol that makes reference to the Middle Ages and the Hanseatic league and at the same time specifically to Pärnu. In the end the idea for the design was that the Hanseatic league was primarily a maritime trade organisation in the North and Baltic Seas, and that Pärnu was the only important seaport of the German order in Livonia”, she explained.
She added that the design for the coin symbolises maritime trade with the geographical coordinates of Pärnu and a compass, which seafarers used to set their course in mediaeval times and still do today. “It is still true that when you think of Pärnu you think of the sea. Coming from Pärnu myself, I really hope that people from the town like this coin”, she said.
The winning designer Aidi Mesi graduated from the Estonian Academy of Arts in graphic design and works as a freelance designer and graphic design instructor.
Coins dedicated to two other Hanseatic towns of Estonia have previously been issued in the series by Eesti Pank. In February 2017 a silver coin and a gold coin dedicated to Hanseatic Tallinn were issued, both now sold out, and in June 2019 a silver coin dedicated to Hanseatic Viljandi was issued, and is still available.
