Die Centralbank of Malta informiert:

The Central Bank of Malta and the Malta Community Chest Fund, have collaborated on the launch of a social responsibility coin programme involving students in all secondary schools, with the theme: 'Mit-tfal b'Solidarjetà'.

The programme was officially launched on Friday, 5 June 2015 by Her Excellency the President of Malta, Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca, and the Governor of the Central Bank of Malta, Professor Josef Bonnici, during a press conference held at the Central Bank of Malta.

The programme, planned over a number of years, involves five themes: Love, Peace, Nature/Environment, Heritage and Games. The theme selected for 2016 is LOVE. This falls within the Mission Statement of the Malta Community Chest Fund as through love and generosity the Fund promotes activities to help individuals with various needs.

The LOVE theme will be represented on a €2 commemorative coin to be issued by the Central Bank of Malta through coin cards and commemorative coin rolls and will be available for sale in 2016. The proceeds from the sale of the coin cards will go to the Malta Community Chest Fund.

The coin design will symbolise LOVE in the wider sense to reflect the important aspect of solidarity. A competition on the coin design will be launched in all secondary schools and an expert panel will shortlist five designs, which will then be submitted for voting by the students. The winning design will be reflected on the coin and a prize will be awarded to the student submitting it. The two runners up will also be awarded a prize while all students participating in the design competition will be given a certificate and memento.

The remaining four themes will also be reproduced on commemorative coins over the coming years.

The schools will inform the students on the regulations guiding the design competition. Designs must be submitted by not later than Friday, 30 October 2015 at 14:00 to:

Hab ich es nur übersehen bzw. nicht gefunden oder lässt man sich in Malta diesmal besonders viel Zeit mit dem Coin-Programme 2016? Sonst endete ja Ende Februar immer schon Bestellfrist für die 2€ CC.

Es gibt Änderungen dieses Jahr. Anstelle der Koninklijke Nederlandse Munt hat diesmal die Monnaie de Paris die Ausschreibung für die KMS gewonnen.

Gruß,
gs

Coins to celebrate the art of Antonio Sciortino

On 25 April 2016 the Central Bank of Malta will issue
numismatic coins in gold and silver celebrating the art of Antonio Sciortino. The coins are issued under the Europa Programme with the theme ‘modern 20th century’ and bear the Europa Star logo.

The gold coin has a face value of €50, while the silver coin has a face value of €10. The €10 silver coin is of 0.925 finesse and has a weight of 28.28g and a diameter of 38.61mm. The minting limit is 3,000 pieces. The €50 gold coin is of 0.916 finesse and has a weight of 6.5g and a diameter of 21mm. The minting limit is 1,000 pieces. Both coins are struck to proof quality.

The coins were designed and engraved by Noel Galea Bason, and were minted at the Royal Dutch Mint. The reverse of the coins carries a representation of Antonio Sciortino’s sculpture ‘Dangerous Sport’ which the artist produced in 1937. Sciortino is arguably Malta’s most internationally acclaimed artist. He spent most of his working life in Rome where he produced a large number of works including ‘Dangerous Sport’. Sciortino’s concern with capturing movement is evident in this artwork, which heralded the style so symbolic of the artist’s distinctly futurist oeuvre. The obverse of the coin features the new face of the Europa Programme coins which incorporates the coat of arms of Malta.

This year’s coins will be part of five-year series dedicated to different periods of European art-forms and history which have been widely grouped as: Modern 20th century (2016), The Age of iron and glass (2017), Baroque and Rococo (2018), Renaissance (2019) and Gothic (2020).

The coins may be purchased directly from the Malta Coins Distribution Centre’s
online e-shop facility or from the main building of the Central Bank of Malta. The gold coin will be sold for €320 and the silver coin for €60.

Coin to mark the 450th anniversary of the foundation of Valletta

file.aspx

On 27 May 2016 the Central Bank of Malta will issue a silver coin to commemorate the 450th anniversary of the foundation of Malta's capital city, Valletta.

This silver coin, which has a face value of €10, is struck to proof quality and will be limited to 3,000 pieces. It is of 0.925 finesse, has a weight of 28.28g and a diameter of 38.61mm.

The coin was designed and engraved by Noel Galea Bason, and will be minted at the Royal Dutch Mint. The coin's obverse features the coat of arms of Malta with the date 2016. The reverse of the coin shows the architect Francesco Laparelli and his assistant Gerolamo Cassar conferring with Grand Master Jean de Valette regarding the building of the new fortified city of Valletta. The building of a new fortified city on the heights of the Sceberras peninsula had long been planned. But it was only in the aftermath of the Great Siege of 1565 that the Order of St John with the backing of the Pope and the King of Spain committed itself firmly to this project. The new city was designed by the Pope's architect Francesco Laparelli and its foundation stone was laid by Grand Master Jean de Valette on 28 March 1566. It was named Valletta in honour of the Grand Master. In 1571 the Order led by Grand Master Pietro del Monte transferred its quarters from Birgu to Valletta. It has served as Malta's capital city ever since. Valletta with its impressive fortifications, outstanding buildings and monuments was added to UNESCO's list of World Heritage Sites in 1980.

The coin will be sold for €60.

Schön wäre es, wenn es dazu auch gleichzeitig die Coincard der Ġgantija Münze gäbe ...
