Die Centralbank of Malta informiert:

The Central Bank of Malta and the Malta Community Chest Fund, have collaborated on the launch of a social responsibility coin programme involving students in all secondary schools, with the theme: 'Mit-tfal b'Solidarjetà'.

The programme was officially launched on Friday, 5 June 2015 by Her Excellency the President of Malta, Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca, and the Governor of the Central Bank of Malta, Professor Josef Bonnici, during a press conference held at the Central Bank of Malta.

The programme, planned over a number of years, involves five themes: Love, Peace, Nature/Environment, Heritage and Games. The theme selected for 2016 is LOVE. This falls within the Mission Statement of the Malta Community Chest Fund as through love and generosity the Fund promotes activities to help individuals with various needs.

The LOVE theme will be represented on a €2 commemorative coin to be issued by the Central Bank of Malta through coin cards and commemorative coin rolls and will be available for sale in 2016. The proceeds from the sale of the coin cards will go to the Malta Community Chest Fund.

The coin design will symbolise LOVE in the wider sense to reflect the important aspect of solidarity. A competition on the coin design will be launched in all secondary schools and an expert panel will shortlist five designs, which will then be submitted for voting by the students. The winning design will be reflected on the coin and a prize will be awarded to the student submitting it. The two runners up will also be awarded a prize while all students participating in the design competition will be given a certificate and memento.

The remaining four themes will also be reproduced on commemorative coins over the coming years.

The schools will inform the students on the regulations guiding the design competition. Designs must be submitted by not later than Friday, 30 October 2015 at 14:00 to:

Commemoration of the St Marija Convoy and the George Cross Award

On 14 August 2017 the Central Bank of Malta and MaltaPost will be issuing a
joint numismatic product to mark the 75th anniversary of the award of the George Cross to Malta, in April 1942, and the arrival of the providential convoy codenamed 'Pedestal' in August 1942. The product will consist of a silver coin and a silver foil stamp replica.

A ruthless bombing campaign by the Axis forces reached its peak during the months of March and April 1942. During the latter month alone 7,000 tons of bombs were dropped on Malta. The island's heroic defence against insurmountable odds prompted King George VI to award the George Cross to Malta "to honour her brave people".

Malta was almost completely isolated at the time and heroic and extremely costly efforts to resupply Malta were unsuccessful. In July 1942 it was decided to run a heavily escorted convoy from Gibraltar. The convoy, codenamed Pedestal, consisted of thirteen merchant ships and the tanker Ohio, escorted by forty-four warships including two battleships and three aircraft carriers. Only four merchant ships managed to arrive in Malta and on 15 August 1942, the feast day of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin, the heavily damaged Ohio, towed by two destroyers, limped into the Grand Harbour. Although it did not guarantee long-term salvation, Operation Pedestal, known locally as the 'Santa Marija' convoy, brought enough supplies to maintain Malta's defences and stave off surrender.

The coin, struck at the Royal Dutch Mint, shows the emblem of Malta and the year of issue 2017 on the obverse. On the reverse the coin depicts the tanker 'Ohio' with a Royal Navy destroyer in the background. This pays tribute to the heroic sacrifice made by the Royal Navy and the Merchant Navy to keep Malta supplied during the Second World War. The coin also depicts the George Cross - a tangible symbol which honours and perpetuates the bravery of the Maltese at the height of the Island's wartime ordeal.

The coin, which can also be purchased on its own, has a face value of €10. It is struck in 0.925 silver, has a weight of 28.28 grams and a diameter of 38.61 mm. It is struck in proof quality and the mintage is limited to 2,000 coins. The coin was designed and engraved by Noel Galea Bason.

The silver replica stamp was also produced for MaltaPost by the Royal Dutch Mint and depicts the €3.00 postage stamp from the 75th Anniversary 'Operation Pedestal' stamp issue.

This joint product is available in a presentation case and is limited to 500 sets. Sets and coins may be purchased from the Malta Coin Centre (MCC) counter at the main building of the Central Bank of Malta, Castille Place, Valletta or the MCC
e-shop. The price of the set is €92, while the price of the coin on its own is €60, both prices inclusive of VAT.

Issue of Coin Commemorating the 70th Anniversary of Women’s Voting Rights

2017 MT.png

On 1 December 2017 the Central Bank of Malta issued a
silver coin to mark the 70th anniversary of the coming into force of the 1947 constitution, which enshrined the principle of universal suffrage to all persons over 21 years of age. This was the first time that Maltese women were given the right to vote - a right which was exercised for the first time on 25-27 October 1947.

The granting of the right to vote to women as well as the right to stand for public office was hotly contested. Evidence of this is the fact that the National Assembly set up to draw up a draft constitution began its work on 20 January 1945 without any women representatives. Two months later the Women of Malta Association was finally admitted to the Assembly with two representatives, Josephine Burns Debono and Hélène Buhagiar.

Maltese women first exercised their right to vote in the elections of 25-27 October 1947. Of the 140,703 eligible voters 54% were women. Of 76,745 registered female voters, 54,565 actually voted. Of the two women candidates, one - Agatha Barbara (1923-2002) - was elected. She would successfully contest ten consecutive elections, be appointed cabinet minister five times, and would be the first Maltese woman to become president of the Republic in 1982. Clearly, the road to full and effective equality for women and men in Malta did not stop with the achievement of 1947. It is still an ongoing process.

The coin, struck at the Royal Dutch Mint, depicts a hand casting a vote in a ballot box. In the background is reproduced the text of the 1947 Constitution specifying that all persons over 21 years of age were eligible to vote. On the obverse the coin carries the emblem of Malta and the year of issue 2017.

The coin has a face value of €10. It is struck in 0.925 silver, has a weight of 28.28 grams and a diameter of 38.61 mm. It is struck in proof quality and the mintage is limited to 1,000 coins. The coin was designed and engraved by Noel Galea Bason.

Coins may be purchased from the Malta Coin Centre (MCC) counter at the main building of the Central Bank of Malta, Castille Place, Valletta or the MCC
e-shop. The price of the coin is €60, inclusive of VAT.
