Issue of Coin Commemorating the Ten Years of the Euro in Malta

Malta1.png

On 9 May 2018 the Central Bank of Malta will issue a numismatic coin to commemorate ten years since Malta adopted the euro.

The coin, which will be struck in cupro-nickel, has a face value of €5 and is only legal tender in Malta. It has a weight of 15.50g and a diameter of 33mm. The minting limit is 2,000 pieces. The coins are produced to Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) quality and were designed and minted at the Royal Dutch Mint.

The reverse of the coins carries a stylized representation of 'Malta' and 'Europa' meant to symbolize Malta's currency transition from the Maltese lira to euro in 2008. The obverse of the coin features the coat of arms of Malta.

When Malta became an EU member state on 1 May 2004 the country was committed to join the EMU and adopt the single European currency. To be able to do this Malta had to fulfil a number of conditions concerning the stability of public finances, prices, interest rates and the exchange rate. Malta adopted the euro on 1 January 2008.

Selling at €20 each, coins may be purchased directly from the Malta Coin Centre or from the main building of the Central Bank of Malta.

Issue of new euro coin set dated 2018

On 21 June 2018 the Central Bank of Malta issued a new euro coin set dated 2018 in a brilliant uncirculated version. The set consists of the eight Maltese euro coins as well as a €2 coin depicting the prehistoric temples of Mnajdra. The latter is the third in a series of seven coins dedicated to Maltese prehistoric monuments.

The set was officially launched by the Governor of the Central Bank of Malta, Dr Mario Vella, at the Ħaġar Qim and Mnajdra Visitor Centre in Qrendi. In the course of this event, which was held in collaboration with Heritage Malta, the invitees were given a guided tour of the Ħaġar Qim and Mnajdra temples and were given the opportunity to view an audio-visual experience intended to help them understand better the significance behind the Neolithic temples.

Mnajdra Temples in Qrendi, Malta, lie in very close proximity to the Ħaġar Qim temples. Mnajdra dates to 3,600-3,200 B.C. and is one of the oldest free-standing monuments in the world. The site was first excavated in 1840 and is best known for its astronomical alignments. Mnajdra is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

All the coins in the set are in brilliant uncirculated quality and were struck at the Monnaie de Paris in France. The national sides of the euro coins and the commemorative €2 coin were designed by Noel Galea Bason. The sets, which will be limited to 15,000, will be presented in an attractive and illustrated blister-pack.

The dated set will be sold for €26.

Philatelic numismatic cover to commemorate the end of the First World War

Screenshot (102).png

On 11 November 2018 MaltaPost, in collaboration with the Central Bank of Malta, will be issuing a philatelic numismatic cover consisting of a brass coin and a postage stamp to mark the centenary of the Armistice which brought the First World War to an end. On 11 November 1918 the allies and Germany signed an armistice which brought an end to the First World War. The war claimed the lives of more than 16 million persons and had a profound impact on the course of world history.

The brass coins which were designed by Noel Galea Bason were struck in circulation quality at the Royal Belgian Mint. The coin reverse features a nurse administering medication to a wounded soldier. This recalls the major humanitarian role played by Malta, called the 'Nurse of the Mediterranean', during the First World War. The figure of a soldier and a poppy, are evocative symbols of remembrance and pay tribute to the many servicemen, including some 600 Maltese, who fell during the conflict. During the war Malta had 27 hospitals and convalescent camps and more than 130,000 casualties were treated in Malta. The obverse shows the emblem of Malta.

The postage stamp depicts the hospital ship 'Rewa' in the Grand Harbour. This ship was sunk by a German submarine on 4 January 1918, whilst on transit from Malta to Britain. The coin and the stamp will be presented together in a purposely designed postal cover which will bear a special cancellation of the first day of issue.

This product is limited to 2,500 covers. It may be purchased on the first day of issue from the MaltaPost branch at Castille Place, Valletta. Covers may also be purchased online from the Malta Coin Centre (MCC)
e-shop and the MaltaPost website. The price of each cover is €10 inclusive of VAT.

Hallo zusamen,
