Die Centralbank of Malta informiert:

The Central Bank of Malta and the Malta Community Chest Fund, have collaborated on the launch of a social responsibility coin programme involving students in all secondary schools, with the theme: 'Mit-tfal b'Solidarjetà'.

The programme was officially launched on Friday, 5 June 2015 by Her Excellency the President of Malta, Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca, and the Governor of the Central Bank of Malta, Professor Josef Bonnici, during a press conference held at the Central Bank of Malta.

The programme, planned over a number of years, involves five themes: Love, Peace, Nature/Environment, Heritage and Games. The theme selected for 2016 is LOVE. This falls within the Mission Statement of the Malta Community Chest Fund as through love and generosity the Fund promotes activities to help individuals with various needs.

The LOVE theme will be represented on a €2 commemorative coin to be issued by the Central Bank of Malta through coin cards and commemorative coin rolls and will be available for sale in 2016. The proceeds from the sale of the coin cards will go to the Malta Community Chest Fund.

The coin design will symbolise LOVE in the wider sense to reflect the important aspect of solidarity. A competition on the coin design will be launched in all secondary schools and an expert panel will shortlist five designs, which will then be submitted for voting by the students. The winning design will be reflected on the coin and a prize will be awarded to the student submitting it. The two runners up will also be awarded a prize while all students participating in the design competition will be given a certificate and memento.

The remaining four themes will also be reproduced on commemorative coins over the coming years.

The schools will inform the students on the regulations guiding the design competition. Designs must be submitted by not later than Friday, 30 October 2015 at 14:00 to:

Malta entgeht wegen der zwei laufenden Gedenkmünzserien ("prähistorische Stätten" und "von Kindern mit Solidarität") die Gelegenheit,

anlässlich der Erhebung von Valletta – Wikipedia zur Kulturhauptstadt Europas 2018

eine Valletta gewidmete Gedenkmünze herauszugeben...

@minted:

Malta schreibt "Cultural Heritage", was du mit "Kulturerbe" übersetzt. Man könnte auch "Kulturelles Erbe" sagen, oder?

On 20 March 2018 the Central Bank of Malta issued numismatic coins in gold and silver depicting 'The Baptism of Christ', a statuary group by Giuseppe Mazzuoli (1644-1725). The coins are issued under the Europa Programme with the theme 'Baroque and Rococo' and bear the Europa Star logo.

The gold coin has a face value of €50, while the silver coin has a face value of €10. These coins are legal tender in Malta only. The €10 coin, which is limited to 2,500 pieces, is struck in silver (0.925 fine). It has a weight of 28.28g and a diameter of 38.61mm. The €50 coin is struck in gold (0.916 fine), weighs 6.5g and has a diameter of 21mm. The minting is limited to 500 pieces.

The coins are struck to proof quality. They were designed and engraved by Noel Galea Bason and were struck at the Royal Dutch Mint. The reverse of the coins depicts the 'Baptism of Christ', a monumental white marble sculpture executed in Rome by Giuseppe Mazzuoli and installed in the apse of St John's Co-Cathedral, Valletta, in 1703.

The obverse of the coin features the coat of arms of Malta and the Europa Star logo. This year's coins will be part of a five-year series dedicated to different periods of European art-forms and history, which have been widely grouped as: Modern 20th century (2016), The Age of iron and glass (2017), Baroque and Rococo (2018), Renaissance (2019) and Gothic (2020).

The coins may be purchased directly from the Malta Coin Centre's online
e-shop facility or from the main building of the Bank. The gold coin will be sold for €340 and the silver coin for €60.

Christian

The gold coins have a face value of €100, while the silver coins have a face value of €10. These coins are legal tender in Malta only. The €10 coin, which is limited to 2,500 pieces, is struck in silver (0.925 fine). It has a weight of 28.28g and a diameter of 38.61mm. The €100 coin is struck in gold (0.999 fine), weighs 15g and has a diameter of 26mm. The minting is limited to just 50 pieces.

The coins are struck to proof quality. They were designed and engraved by Noel Galea Bason and were struck at the Royal Dutch Mint. The reverse of the coins carries a representation of the façade of the Bank's newly-built premises, 'Binja Laparelli' located within St James's Counterguard in Valletta. The coins also bear a 50th Anniversary logo designed by Michael Grech and Daniel Galea of MCAST Arts and Design Institute. Selective gold-plating has been used on the silver coins. It is the first time that such a technique has been used on Maltese numismatic coins.

The obverse of the coins features the coat of arms of Malta together with the coins' denomination.

The setting up of a central bank for Malta was one of the recommendations made by United Nations team of experts in January 1964. Shortly after, on 21 September 1964, Malta gained independence from Britain. In 1967 draft legislation for the setting up of the Central Bank of Malta Act was steered through parliament and was passed in November of the same year. The Central Bank of Malta was formally established on 17 April 1968 by the coming into force of the Central Bank of Malta Act.

The silver coins to be issued on 17 April may be purchased directly from the Malta Coin Centre's (MCC) online e-shop facility or from the main building of the Bank. The silver coin will be sold for €60. The gold coins have been allocated as per lot drawn by a public notary as announced on MCC's website and social media during February 2018.
