Central Bank of Malta informiert:

News - News Releases 2021

03/02/2021

‘Heroes of the Pandemic’ featured in 2021 numismatic coin programme

The Central Bank of Malta’s Numismatic Coin Programme for 2021 features a special edition coin card marking the ‘Heroes of the Pandemic’.

As in previous years, the coin programme offers a range of products for all collectors. Following last year’s success, this year’s programme also includes a limited edition high-value gold coin weighing one ounce.

The 2021 coin programme includes the following products:

  • A gold and silver coin marking the 550th anniversary of the birth of Albrecht Dürer. Dürer was born in Nüremberg in 1471. He was a prolific and versatile artist and a dominant figure of European Renaissance art. Dürer is probably best known for his printmaking, an art form that he elevated to great heights. Dürer’s art can be admired in various museums worldwide and the Malta coin will have as its subject one of the Dürer prints found in the collections of the Mdina Cathedral Museum in Malta. These coins are expected to be issued in April 2021.
  • A silver numismatic coin depicting the iconic Bibliotheca, which today houses the National Library of Malta. This grand building, located in the heart of Valletta – and one of the very last to be built by the Order of St John in Malta – was completed in 1796, 225 years ago. This coin is expected to be issued in June 2021.
  • A €2 commemorative coin commemorating the front-line ‘heroes’ of the COVID-19 pandemic. The coin will only be issued individually in coin cards. These are expected to be issued in June 2021.
  • A euro coin set, dated 2021, consisting of the eight Maltese, euro circulation coins together with a €2 commemorative coin featuring the Tarxien Temples. This set is expected to be issued in October 2021.
  • A €2 commemorative coin featuring the Tarxien Temples. This will be the sixth in a series of seven coins featuring Maltese prehistoric structures on the UNESCO World Heritage list. The coin will be issued in rolls, containing 25 coins each, as well as individually in coin cards. The coins are expected to be available in October 2021.
  • A silver coin to mark the centenary of the 1921 self-government constitution. This was a very important milestone along Malta’s tortuous road towards political independence from Britain. The 1921 constitution gave the Maltese a measure of responsible government and also saw the establishment of Malta’s first parliament. This important historic milestone will also be marked with a special limited edition gold coin weighing one ounce. This coin is limited exclusively to Platinum Package holders. Please refer to the Malta Coin Centre website for details of the package. Both coins are expected to be issued in November 2021.

50th Anniversary of the Armed Forces of Malta coins launch

Screenshot (204).png

On 24th March 2021, the Malta Coin Centre of the Central Bank of Malta will be issuing two numismatic coins in silver and cupro-nickel, marking the 50th anniversary of the Armed Forces of Malta.

Mr Alexander Demarco, Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Malta, officially launched the coins during an event organised by the Armed Forces of Malta at the Luqa Barracks, on 18 December 2020.

The coin design was made in collaboration between the Central Bank of Malta and the Armed Forces of Malta. The coins were manufactured by the Royal Dutch Mint.

On the reverse, the coins feature the regimental badge of the Armed Forces of Malta on a red-on-blue coloured background. On the obverse is the coat of arms of the Republic of Malta together with the year of issue.
