Ausgabeprogramm Malta 2021

‘Heroes of the Pandemic’ featured in 2021 numismatic coin programme

The Central Bank of Malta’s Numismatic Coin Programme for 2021 features a special ******* coin card marking the ‘Heroes of the Pandemic’.

As in previous years, the coin programme offers a range of products for all collectors. Following last year’s success, this year’s programme also includes a limited ******* high-value gold coin weighing one ounce.

The 2021 coin programme includes the following products:

  • A gold and silver coin marking the 550th anniversary of the birth of Albrecht Dürer. Dürer was born in Nüremberg in 1471. He was a prolific and versatile artist and a dominant figure of European Renaissance art. Dürer is probably best known for his printmaking, an art form that he elevated to great heights. Dürer’s art can be admired in various museums worldwide and the Malta coin will have as its subject one of the Dürer prints found in the collections of the Mdina Cathedral Museum in Malta. These coins are expected to be issued in April 2021.
  • A silver numismatic coin depicting the iconic Bibliotheca, which today houses the National Library of Malta. This grand building, located in the heart of Valletta – and one of the very last to be built by the Order of St John in Malta – was completed in 1796, 225 years ago. This coin is expected to be issued in June 2021.
  • A €2 commemorative coin commemorating the front-line ‘heroes’ of the COVID-19 pandemic. The coin will only be issued individually in coin cards. These are expected to be issued in June 2021.
  • A euro coin set, dated 2021, consisting of the eight Maltese, euro circulation coins together with a €2 commemorative coin featuring the Tarxien Temples. This set is expected to be issued in October 2021.
  • A €2 commemorative coin featuring the Tarxien Temples. This will be the sixth in a series of seven coins featuring Maltese prehistoric structures on the UNESCO World Heritage list. The coin will be issued in rolls, containing 25 coins each, as well as individually in coin cards. The coins are expected to be available in October 2021.
  • A silver coin to mark the centenary of the 1921 self-government constitution. This was a very important milestone along Malta’s tortuous road towards political independence from Britain. The 1921 constitution gave the Maltese a measure of responsible government and also saw the establishment of Malta’s first parliament. This important historic milestone will also be marked with a special limited ******* gold coin weighing one ounce. This coin is limited exclusively to Platinum Package holders. Please refer to the Malta Coin Centre website for details of the package. Both coins are expected to be issued in November 2021.

New Central Bank of Malta coin issue commemorates birth of Albrecht Dürer

In the coming weeks, the Central Bank of Malta will issue numismatic coins in gold and silver commemorating 550 years since the birth of artist Albrecht Dürer.

The gold coin has a face value of €50, and the silver coin has a face value of €10. The €10 coins are limited to 1,000 pieces and are struck in 0.925 silver. Each coin weighs 28.28g and has a diameter of 38.61mm. The €50 coins are limited to just 400 pieces, and each is struck in 0.916 gold, weighs 6.5g and has a diameter of 21mm. The silver and gold coins are finished to proof quality.

The coins were designed and engraved by Noel Galea Bason and were minted at the Royal Dutch Mint. The obverse of the coins features the coat of arms of Malta. The reverse shows a representation of one of Dürer's woodcut engravings entitled 'St George and the Dragon'.

Albrecht Dürer was born in the city of Nuremberg on 21 May 1471. Although his work was steeped in the German late-Gothic style, his travels to Italy brought him in contact with the Italian Renaissance, which influenced him profoundly. He was an accomplished artist but is best remembered for the prodigious amount of engravings he made: some 346 woodcuts and 108 copper engravings. Dürer elevated engraving to a high art form. His prints are appreciated for their aesthetic qualities, intricate and minute details, and the deft techniques employed to create shading and spatial depth.

Dürer is an icon of German and European art, and his works are featured in museums and galleries worldwide. In Malta, the Mdina Cathedral Museum has a prestigious collection of around 74 original works - 60 woodcuts and 14 engravings - including 'St George and the Dragon', which inspired the artwork of the Central Bank of Malta coin.

The Bank has launched a short, informative video about the Dürer collection at the museum, as well as about the engraving selected for the numismatic launch. This can be viewed below. The Mdina Cathedral Museum will be holding an exhibition dedicated to Dürer from 21 May to August.
