The South African Reserve Bank is issuing a special commemorative R2 coin, celebrating 10 years of democracy in South Africa.
Instead of the well-known image of the Kudu normally found on existing R2 coins, the commemorative coin will feature the "10 years of freedom" logo, depicting people carrying the South African Flag in line to vote. The logo carries the wording, '10 YEARS OF FREEDOM - South Africa 1994 - 2004'. The commemorative R2 coin will become legal tender on 1 August 2004.
In addition to the "10 years of freedom" logo, the commemorative R2 coin will also feature the South African Coat of Arms which came into use in 2000.
The motto on the Coat of the Arms, "!ke e: /xarra //ke", is written in the Khoisan language and literally means "diverse people unite". Symbols from the Coat of Arms include two human figures from Khoisan rock art facing each other in greeting and unity; the secretary bird in flight, symbolising growth and speed and the rising sun symbolising the promise of rebirth.
Other recent commemorative coins issued by the South African Reserve Bank included a coin to celebrate South Africa hosting the Cricket World Cup in 2003 and another to commemorate the World Summit on Sustainable Development which took place in South Africa, also in 2003.

2004 - Riksbank decides to issue commemorative coin and note
The Executive Board of the Riksbank decided at its meeting on 9 June to issue a commemorative coin to mark the 250th anniversary of the Royal Palace in Stockholm. It was also decided that a special banknote would be issued to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the founding of Tumba Bruk banknote paper mill.
The commemorative coin will be issued in two denominations; a gold coin with the denomination SEK 2,000 and a silver coin with the denomination SEK 200, with effect from 1 October. The prices are set at SEK 2,500 and SEK 250 respectively. The design of the coin will be determined by the General Council of the Riksbank in August and presented in connection with the issuing of the coin.
The commemorative banknote will be in the denomination SEK 100 and sales of the note will begin in spring 2005, in connection with the opening of the mill museum at Tumba. The proposed price of the note is SEK 150. The design of the banknote will be determined by the General Council of the Riksbank during autumn 2004.
It is extremely rare that commemorative banknotes are issued. In Sweden it has only occurred on two previous occasions; in 1948 (King Gustaf V’s 90th birthday) and in 1968 (the 300th anniversary of the Riksbank).

New Delhi, Sep 30.(PTI, UNI): New Delhi, Sep 29 (UNI) The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) on Wednesday approved minting of new series of coins and introduction of Rs ten denomination coins.
The government will introduce the coins to partially supplement Rs 10 notes.
This follows the approval given on Wednesday by the Cabinet Committee of Economic Affairs for this purpose.
The CCEA also delegated powers to Finance Ministry for design and metal composition for the ten-rupee coins, an official release said.
The designs and themes of the new series of designs have been prepared by National Institute of Design at Ahmedabad.
The coins will be issued with three different themes -- Unity in Diversity, Mudras from Bharatnatyam and Connectivity and Information Technology.
The observe side of all the coins will, however, carry Lion Capital as well as denomination in Roman numerals.
The CCEA also gave its approval for delegating powers to the Finance Minister for any change of design and metal composition in the new series of coins considered necessary keeping in view metal cost and the possibility of counterfeiting by unsocial elements.
The coins of Rs ten denomination will be introduced to partially supplement the demand for notes of Rs ten denomination. Notes of Rs ten denomination will continue to be printed and issued in circulation, though in reduced quantity.
Bank of Israel plans to launch two-shekel coin soon

The Bank of Israel yesterday announced plans to mint a two-shekel coin in the near future.
In the annual survey of the currency department released yesterday, officials emphasized that the two-shekel coin would reduce the number of coins in circulation and make payments more efficient, especially for large-scale users like supermarkets, transport companies and vending machines, as well as for the public.
A poll commissioned by the Bank of Israel showed that two-thirds of people questioned said they saw the need for the new coin and would be willing to use it.
The annual survey noted that at the end of 2003, NIS 19.1 billion worth of coins was in in the hands of the public and the banks, 4.4 percent more than in 2002.
The most common coin in circulation is the 10-agorot coin, which is used frequently on urban public transportation.
The survey also showed that bills of NIS 50 and NIS 100 were the most common ones in circulation, accounting for 74 percent of the bills in use. The use of the NIS 200 bill is on the rise, from 15 percent in 2002 to 16 percent in 2003. On the other hand, use of the NIS 20 shekel bill is declining. In 2003, for the second year in a row, its share in bill circulation was only 11 percent.
Use of the NIS 20 shekel bill is in decline primarily because automatic tellers stock it infrequently. Due to higher operation costs, the NIS 50 bill also appears less in the teller slots, since the NIS 100 shekel bill went into circulation.
In July 2003, the Bank of Israel began producing NIS 20 shekel bills out of higher quality paper, similar to the paper on which U.S. dollars are printed, in order to increase the life of the bill and save money on printing costs.
New pennies proposed to celebate Lincoln's birthday

WASHINGTON - Two hundred years after his birth, Honest Abe may get a face-lift if a coalition of lawmakers gets its way.
Lawmakers from Indiana, Illinois and Kentucky - all former homes of the nation's 16th president - have introduced a bill that would celebrate the Lincoln bicentennial by issuing four new pennies, each celebrating a different chapter in his life.
Talk about a cool party favor.
The proposal, first recommended by a commission tasked with planning Lincoln's birthday bash, would celebrate Lincoln's childhood in Kentucky, his early adulthood in Indiana, his political career in Illinois and his presidency in Washington.
The head of the coin would remain the same under the proposal but in sharper relief. The tails would feature new designs celebrating the four different eras of Lincoln's life. The coins would be issued in 2009, on Lincoln's bicentennial, with a new one coming out every three months.
At the end of the program, the lawmakers propose that the tail of the penny will bear "an image emblematic of President Lincoln's preservation of the United States of America as a single and united country." That image could be the Lincoln Memorial depiction currently on the coin or could be a new image, according to commission members.
Michael Bishop, executive director of the Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission, said the coin will be part of a larger celebration that will include the creation of a special commemorative bicentennial coin, Lincoln stamps and a large-scale traveling exhibition.
Darrel Bigham, a member of the bicentennial commission and a history professor at the University of Southern Indiana in Evansville, said that the proposal could help educate the public about geography and history - namely, Lincoln's formative years in the Ohio Valley. It could also help promote heritage tourism in Indiana, Illinois and Kentucky.
"People need to understand where he came from," he said.
The proposal comes after successful programs redesigning quarters and nickels. The U.S. Mint estimates that the state quarter program alone has contributed at least $4 billion to the U.S. Treasury to date, and estimates that more than 130 million Americans collect the state quarters.
Doug Mudd, museum curator for the American Numismatic Association, said the penny program will launch about the time the state quarter program is ending. Collectors who previously horded state quarters might just start collecting new Lincoln pennies instead, he said.
The nation celebrated Lincoln's 150th birthday by adding the Lincoln Memorial to the back of the penny, he said. That design quickly became commonplace, but wasn't marketed as aggressively as the new program will likely be.
Beth Deisher, editor of Coin World magazine, said redesigns of regularly used coins have been popular, though many have not yet seen the new Jefferson nickels commemorating the Lewis and Clark expedition.
The penny, however, is different than the nickel and coins, she said.
"The penny doesn't circulate like other denominations," she said. "The one cent tends to lie around on people's dressers ... but there's nothing to indicate it won't be quite a popular program."
United States Mint Unveils Dramatic New Nickel Designs for 2005
A New Image of Jefferson, the Return of a Buffalo, and an Ocean in View!
WASHINGTON – The United States Mint announced today that it is issuing two newly designed 5-cent coins (nickels) in 2005 to complete the Westward Journey Nickel Series™. A fresh, new image of President Thomas Jefferson will grace the obverse (heads side) of both nickels. It will be the first time that the image of Jefferson has changed on the nickel.
The reverse (tails side) of the first nickel (to be released in early 2005) will be an American bison design that is reminiscent of the beloved Buffalo Nickel. A second newly designed nickel (to be issued in the late summer of 2005) will feature the same new image of Jefferson on the obverse, with a reverse design that signifies the culmination of the Lewis and Clark expedition. The nickel series has symbolically followed Lewis and Clark along their journey.
“The 2005 nickel designs follow Thomas Jefferson’s vision to explore the Great West,” said United States Mint Director Henrietta Holsman Fore in a news conference at agency headquarters in Washington. “These small pieces of contemporary art will place us at those spellbinding moments when Lewis and Clark first encountered a grazing American bison and later the vastness of the western waters.”
The three new images (one obverse, two reverse) were selected from 144 designs submitted by the United States Mint sculptor-engravers and the 24 artists in the agency’s new Artistic Infusion Program. United States Mint sculptor-engravers Donna Weaver, Norman Nemeth and Don Everhart later sculpted the selected designs into the images that will appear on the new coins.
Artist Joe Fitzgerald of Silver Spring, Maryland, designed two of the new images – the obverse of Thomas Jefferson with the word “Liberty” written in Jefferson’s own hand and the “Ocean in view! O! The joy!” reverse image for the second nickel of 2005. The quote, “Ocian [sic] in view! O! The joy!” is from William Clark’s journal and referred to the ecstatic moment at which the expedition felt its quest to reach the Pacific Ocean had been fulfilled.
Artist Jamie Franki of Concord, North Carolina, designed the “Grazing Buffalo” image for the reverse of the first nickel of 2005. This nickel recognizes the American Indians and wildlife encountered by the Lewis and Clark Expedition.
A law passed by Congress and approved by President Bush in April 2003 authorized the redesign of the nickel for the first time since 1938 to commemorate the bicentennials of the Louisiana Purchase and the Lewis and Clark Expedition. The Peace Medal nickel went into circulation in March 2004, and the Keelboat nickel followed in August. In 2006, an image of Monticello, Jefferson’s Virginia home, will return to the nickel reverse, while a likeness of Jefferson will continue to grace the coin’s obverse. A National Endowment for the Arts/United States Mint panel evaluated the nickel design candidates for 2005 and selected the 17 most promising images, which then were submitted to the Commission of Fine Arts and the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee for their review. The Treasury Secretary considered the comments and recommendations of these two panels in approving the final design selections.
