The San Marino 10-euro coin 2026 is dedicated to the kingfisher (Alcedo atthis), a colourful bird found in Europe as well as parts of Asia and North Africa. This coin is issued exclusively in a set containing three issues from 2026.
The kingfisher is characterised by its iridescent blue-and-orange plumage, short tail and distinctive pointed bill. With a body length of around 16 to 17 centimetres and a weight of 35 to 40 grams, the kingfisher lives near slow-moving or still waters. There it mainly feeds on small fish, aquatic insects and amphibians. One of the kingfisher's special adaptations is its excellent eyesight, which enables it to locate prey precisely even underwater. It dives vertically into the water with its body to seize prey with its bill.
In many cultures, the kingfisher is regarded as a symbol of good fortune, peace and pure waters. In Europe, it is not only very popular among ornithologists, but is also protected because its population is threatened by environmental pollution and habitat loss. No direct historical significance in the sense of historical events or depictions has been handed down for the kingfisher.
The coin is made of a copper-nickel alloy (Cu/Ni), has a diameter of 27,90 mm and a total weight of 10,1 grams with a fine weight of 10,08 grams. The issue is produced in Brilliant uncirculated quality (BU) and is available exclusively in a set. Each coin is individually encapsulated and securely and appropriately packaged as part of the official set.
