The 10-euro coin from San Marino, issued in 2026, is dedicated to a remarkable mammal: the hazel dormouse (Muscardinus avellanarius). The coin is issued as part of a set comprising three issues from 2026 and is available exclusively in this combination. The coin is made of a copper-nickel alloy (Ku/Ni), has a total weight of 10,1 grams, a fine weight of 10,08 grams and a diameter of 27,90 mm. Its condition is stated as Brilliant uncirculated (BU).

The hazel dormouse is a rodent found in Europe and parts of Asia and belongs to the dormouse family (Gliridae). Its preferred habitats are deciduous and mixed forests, shrublands and hedgerows. The hazel dormouse is nocturnal, has a rounded body and bushy tail, and is distinguished by its excellent climbing ability. Its diet consists mainly of hazelnuts, berries, fruit, insects and buds. A special characteristic of the hazel dormouse is its hibernation, which lasts up to seven months and takes place in self-made sleeping nests. Through its ability to disperse nuts and seeds, the hazel dormouse plays an important role in the ecosystems of its habitats.

In various countries, including San Marino, the hazel dormouse is a protected species subject to special conservation measures. Population declines are primarily caused by the loss of suitable habitats due to the intensification of agriculture and the reduction of hedgerows. In the European and international context, the hazel dormouse is regarded as a symbol of conservation measures for traditional cultural landscapes and near-natural forests. The coin issue thus honours an animal that is not only ecologically significant, but also draws attention to the challenges involved in preserving biodiversity.
