2-euro commemorative coins at a glance
The most popular collecting area in the euro sector: euro coins as official legal tender – with changing designs, attractive special issues and an enthusiastic community of collectors throughout Europe. Everything you need to know at a glance.
Why do you find 2-euro commemorative coins in your wallet?
Unlike other euro commemorative coins, 2-euro commemorative coins are official legal tender in all euro-area countries. This means they can often be exchanged cheaply at banks in the issuing country – at their face value of 2 euros. With a little luck, foreign coins may also turn up in your change, particularly in tourist regions. However, such circulated coins often no longer have a collectible grade – they are still a good introduction to collecting.
What are 2-euro commemorative coins worth?
Alongside the enjoyment of collecting a manageable area, positive price development is also a genuine incentive. The best-known example is the Grace Kelly 2-euro coin (Monaco 2007): only 20,000 specimens were minted – and the combination of a sought-after subject and tiny mintage sent its price soaring.
In the finest condition and with its original case, this coin regularly achieves prices of around 1,900 euros.
Getting started in this collecting area is much more affordable: Brilliant uncirculated coins from original rolls are usually available from us for as little as 3.50 euros.
2-euro rolls from Germany are also a popular collecting item. Since many collectors exchanged rolls at their banks on the issue date, premiums are generally low – the exception is the Holstentor 2006, which is traded at a noticeable premium.
Which qualities are available?
CIRCULATION COINS & ROLLS
Brilliant uncirculated coins from original rolls – minted in high quantities for circulation. Our coins always come directly from sealed original rolls, so you receive flawless quality.
Proof (PP)
Special issues produced specifically for collectors: a mirror-like background, frosted design – virtually flawless quality in a small mintage.
Blister packs & Coincards
Some countries package their coins in special blister packs or Coincards – often in very small mintages, with background information and above-average coin quality.
2-euro coins: designs & reverse

| G | Karlsruhe |
| J | Hamburg |
Which catalogue do we recommend?
There are several printed books on this subject – but no catalogue is as up to date as a well-maintained online directory.
We always keep the latest data on all issues available in our shop – including current prices, mintages and images.
The first 2-euro commemorative coin
The very first 2-euro commemorative coin was issued in Greece in 2004 for the Olympic Games in Athens – thereby ushering in a collecting area that continues to grow to this day.
Unusual coins in your change – what is behind them?
Anyone who finds a strangely designed 2-euro coin in their hand quickly wonders: Is it a minting error, and what is it worth? We explain objectively what you should look out for – and why the reality is usually disappointing.
I have an unusual 2-euro coin – is it worth anything?
That sounds exciting at first – but in the vast majority of cases, the answer is no. Millions of 2-euro coins are minted fully automatically. This results in minor inaccuracies in the design, minimal shifts or surface irregularities – this is normal mass production, not a documented minting error.
Genuine numismatic minting errors with real market value are extremely rare and are immediately recognised as such by experts. They are not caused by slight off-centre strikes, but by fundamental errors in the minting process – such as an incorrect die pairing or a double-struck coin with a clearly measurable displacement.
Why are most alleged minting errors worthless?
Confusion with regular issues
Some regular circulation coins look unusual at first glance – for example because of an unfamiliar design or because they come from another euro-area country. They were minted in completely normal mass quantities and are not collector's items.
Manufacturing variation
Minor shifts or irregularities in the design are unavoidable in industrial production. They do not give a coin any exceptional character worthy of collectors.
Counterfeits
Some conspicuous pieces are not genuine euro coins, but poor-quality imitations. They have no collector value – and passing them on as legal tender is a criminal offence.
No genuine market
There are simply no paying collectors for most alleged minting errors. Prices on sales platforms reflect wishful thinking, not genuine transactions.
